Yohji reached for the sheathed Emperor’s Sword at his side but did not yet draw it, even though his instincts told him to. “Okay, there are six of them and three of us. I will take on five of them and leave the other one to you two.”

Sylvia gave Yohji a shocked look. “Are you sure you are willing to take on five of them all by yourself?”

Calavian groaned. “No, he is not. He is probably only saying that to annoy me and to try to get some fake glory for himself.”

Yohji shot Calavian an annoyed look. “Or maybe I just want an actual challenge for once in order to further refine my Swordmaster skills. Not all of us grew up in the lap of luxury like you did, you know. Some of us actually had to work for our Paths and our skills.”

Calavian smirked at Yohji. “You do realize one cannot become an Element Master without working hard to master four different Paths at once, right? But please, go on about how my privileged life has just been handed to me on a silver platter from the heavens.”

Yohji glared at Calavian, but before he could respond to Calavian’s sarcasm, Sylvia stepped between them and said, in a slightly anxious voice, “Can you two please stop bickering for a few minutes? We need to work together if we are going to defeat these cultists.”

“Don’t make them stop!” a rough female voice called out from among the cultists. “Watching those two arrogant men bicker like little boys over who will impress the cute girl is funny.”

A female cultist stepped out from the rest of them and lowered her hood. She looked quite young to Yohji, barely older than Sylvia, but with a pointed nose and a gold earring in her left ear. With significantly less hair and many more scars on her face, the female cultist looked like she had seen more than her fair share of violence in her life. Yohji tried to pick up on her spirit presence but found it impossible thanks to the black robes she wore. She had to be tough, though, if she was willing to stand out from her fellow cultists like that.

“I take it you are the leader of this particular group of cultists?” asked Calavian, a fireball already forming in the palm of his hand. “Or are you just a mouthy woman who doesn’t know when to keep her mouth shut?”

The female cultist giggled. “That is rich coming from the man who can’t stop talking. But to answer your question, yes. I am Laurie Steelfingers, one of the Eldest of the Children of Kong, and thanks to you, I will soon be his favorite as I help free the Dragon from his eternal imprisonment.”

Yohji raised an eyebrow. “What is an Eldest?”

“That is simply our term for the highest-ranking members in the cult,” explained Laurie. “It isn’t based on age but rather on competence and loyalty to Kong. And let it be known that I am quite competent and extremely loyal to Kong—more so, I would say, than any of my peers.
